From June through August, summer season is a time for fun vacations and outings with family and friends. Wherever one’s destination in Korea may be, check out some of these fascinating summer festivals to help you forget the scorching heat. For summer activities, the best of the best includes beach festivals like Busan’s Haeundae Sand Festival in June, the West Coast’s Boryeong Mud Festival in July, and the Busan Sea Festival in August. There are also cultural festivals like the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, where one can watch fantasy movies all night long, the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, with performances by internationally famous rock musicians, and the Gangjin Celadon Festival, which features a variety of ancient ceramics. With so many great festivals to choose from, it’s easy to find many ways to enjoy your summer in Korea.

Haeundae Sand Festival
When: May 29 (Fri) – June 1 (Mon), 2015 Where: Haeundae Beach area in Busan Description: This festival is an eco-friendly celebration set on the beautiful Haeundae Beach in Busan. The festival’s main attraction is the sand sculpture exhibition where the works of famous local and international sand sculptors are displayed along the beach. Hansan Ramie Fabric Cultural Festival
When: June 11 (Thu) – June 14 (Sun), 2015 Where: Hansan Mosi (Ramie Fabric) Museum vicinity in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do Description: Hansan mosi (한산모시, ramie fabric) is one of the world’s oldest forms of fabric made from plants. On display at this unique festival are hundreds of beautiful clothes made from ramie. Skilled artisans guide visitors through every step of the processing of the famed hansan ramie: from how the ramie plant is grown to how it’s spun into thread and used to make clothing. There will also be a demonstration of hansan mosi weaving (added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity in 2011), so visitors can get a direct experience of Korea’s age-old ramie yarn tradition. |

World Taekwondo Culture Expo
[Photo Credit: The World Taekwondo Culture Expo Organizing Committee]When: July 10 (Fri) – July 15 (Wed), 2015 Where: Muju-gun area in Jeollabuk-do Description: The World Taekwondo Expo, a major taekwondo festival, is hosted by Muju County in Jeollabuk-do. Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival
When: July 10 (Thu) – July 19 (Sun), 2015 Where: Seodong Park and Gungnamji Pond area in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do Description: The Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival is held at Gungnamji, Korea’s first man-made pond, which was created near the royal palace by King Muwang (r. 600-641 AD) of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BC – 660 AD). The most popular performance at the festival is the love story between Prince Seodong (King Muwang’s childhood name) and Princess Seonhwa. Other programs include lotus face-painting, drinking lotus tea, making lotus soap, and an art contest. |
Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
[Photo Credit: BiFan Organizing Committee]When: July 16 (Thu) – July 26 (Sun), 2015 Where: Official Theaters: Bucheon City Hall, Korea Manhwa Content Agency, CGV Sopung, CGV Bucheon, Special Theaters: Bucheon Gym, Bucheon Grass Square, Sosa & Ojeonggu 2 outdoor theaters * The above venues are tentative. Description: Movies are shown throughout the entire festival period and audiences can attend discussions with film directors. This unique film festival screens movies from all over the world and from a variety of genres, including horror, mystery, thriller, and sci-fi. |
Boryeong Mud Festival
When: July 17 (Sat) – July 26 (Sun), 2015 Where: Daecheon Beach Mud Square in Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do Description: At the Boryeong Mud Festival, visitors jump in a huge pool of mud for more than just fun, as Boryeong mud is well-known for its excellent quality and efficacy. This fun, action-packed festival is popular among local and international visitors because it offers various programs such as the mud massage pack, colored-mud body painting, and mud soap-making. Pohang International Fireworks Festival
When: July 30 (Thu) – August 2 (Sun), 2015 Where: Hyeongsangang Sports Park, Yeongildae Northern Beach and others, Gyeongsangbuk-do Description: The Pohang International Fireworks Festival offers fantastic views of the night sky as it is lit up by fireworks made by representatives from different countries during the international fireworks contest in Pohang, a coastal town famous for its sunrise. Festivities include the light parade, live beach concerts, light art contests, and much more. |
Hamyang Wild Ginseng Festival

The Hamyang Wild Ginseng Festival is held to promote these local products. During the festival period, visitors can participate in numerous hands-on programs like harvesting, pottery making, making wild ginseng rice cakes, and many more. |
Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival
When: July 31 (Fri) – August 6 (Thu), 2015 Where: Jangheung Tamjingang River and Pyeonbaek Forest Woodland area in Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do Description: This is a unique festival which has its foundations in the waters of the Tamjin River and Jangheung Multipurpose Dam in Jangheung. The festival teaches the value of water to the environment, humans, and energy in many ways through exhibits, films, and hands-on programs. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival

Bonghwa Eun-Uh (Sweet Fish) Festival
When: August 1 (Sat) – August 8 (Sat), 2015 Where: Naeseongcheon Stream area and Bonghwa Gun Sports Park in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Description: This festival is held at Naeseongcheon Stream in Bonghwa-gun. The main programs are catching sweetfish with a net or with just one’s bare hands, and sweetfish-related exhibits. Sweet fish are small freshwater fish with a light watermelon smell. |
Gangjin Celadon Festival
When: August 1 (Sat) – August 9 (Sun), 2015 Where: Gangjin Goryeo Celadon Kiln Site area in Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do Description: The festival is held in Gangjin, the largest production site of celadon in Korea from the 8th to the 14th century. Tongyeong Great Battle of Hansan Festival
[Photo Credit: The Great Battle of Hansan]When: August 12 (Wed) – August 16 (Sun), 2015 Where: Byeongseonmadang, Tongyeong Sebyeonggwan Hall and Yi Sun-shin Park in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do Description: The Tongyeong Great Battle of Hansan Festival is held to commemorate the patriotism of General Yi Sun-shin (1545-1598), who led his army to victory during the Imjin War (war against two Japanese invasions between 1592 and 1598). The festival features Yi Sun-shin-related exhibitions, ocean sports, as well as making a model geobukseon (iron-clad turtle ship built by General Yi during the Imjin War) and bows. |
Jecheon International Music & Film Festival

Muju Firefly Festival

It’s a clean environment that provides the perfect habitat for fireflies. Visitors to the Firefly Festival are greeted by an unforgettable sight: tens of thousands of fireflies lighting up the warm summer night.
