Korea Tourism Organization has prepared a special program for foreign tourists to celebrate the upcoming Lotus Lantern Festival.
Lotus Lantern Festival originated as an important Buddhist ceremony and a big national event. However, after its designation as one of Korea's Important Intangible Cultural Properties, it grew from its religious ritual roots into a world-class festival, attracting millions of domestic and international tourists alike.
Participants in this program will make their own lanterns, taste temple dishes and watch the lotus lantern parade, getting a first-hand experience of Buddhist culture in Korea. The participants will also join the crowds during the main event, parading their hand-made lanterns in the yeondeunghoe parade. The parade will boast an ocean of lotus lanterns lighting up the night, carrying hundreds of thousands of wishes and hopes from the participants and spectators in the tide.
If you want a more authentic experience of the Buddhist culture of Korea, the temple stay program is a great option. The two-day program will allow participants not only to join all programs of the Lotus Lantern Festival but also enjoy tea-tasting, learn traditional Buddhist culture and more. These various programs offered at the temple stay will certainly take your temple visit and experience of Buddhist culture to the next level.
The Lotus Lantern Festival events are free of charge, but the temple stay program is 70,000 won per person. Applications are being accepted at hallyu@knto.or.kr until May 11, 2015, and the final 150 participants will be selected through a raffle process.
