Introduction

The Jincheon Bell Museum (진천종박물관) was opened in September 2005 with the objective of promoting the unique artistic value of Korean bells. The museum’s Jincheon location itself is also very meaningful, as it is the oldest steel production site in Korea. In the nearby area, Uncheon-dong, Beomjong (a temple bell) of late Tongilsilla Kingdom (the United Silla Kingdom) was discovered along with the remains of the Ongdusaji Cheoldanggan of the Goryeo Dynasty. Since a bell museum focuses especially on the culture of temple bells, which are a culmination of metal craftwork, it seems inevitable that the museum is located in Jincheon where the biggest steel mill was located in ancient times.

* Exhibition Hall #1
Entitled the "The Birth of Bells", the exhibition room displays Seongdeokdaewangsinjong (the bell of King Seongdeok); and explains in detail the history, origin and the significance of bells and bell tolling, the underlying meaning of their sound; and displays images of bells arranged by period.

* Exhibition Hall #2
This room features marks and patterns of bells, production techniques, sounds, peculiar bells, and the echo of Jincheon. On the sideline, it also has a theater for 50 people where you can learn about a bell and its sounds.

* Exhibition Hall #3
The rooftop hall is home to an outdoor stage and a bell-tolling site that allows visitors to try out what it is like to strike the Sangwonsa Temple Bell, the oldest in the nation, and a temple bell that is two-thirds the actual size of Seongdeokdaewangsinjong bell.
